International Pupils

We welcome over 28 nationalities to ÓûÂþɬ, each contributing something unique to our diverse and vibrant community.

Our non-denominational status provides a relaxed environment allowing pupils from different cultures to fit in seamlessly and mix freely. Overseas pupils with specific cultural needs are catered for in the most appropriate and sensitive way.

With our full 7-day week programme, life is fulfilling and enjoyable for boarders. Every child receives the support and encouragement needed to settle into their home away from home and thrive whilst in our care.

For those thinking of joining us from overseas, the Admissions Process is similar to that for UK-based applicants. We appreciate that it isn’t always possible to visit us in person, so initial meetings and assessments can be held over video call.

To progress the application process for international pupils, there are a few additional considerations – please read below to find out more.

Visas

For non-British residents, a valid passport is required to study at ÓûÂþɬ. In this instance, they will likely need to apply for a Child Student Visa. To support and progress the visa application, a  Confirmation for Acceptance for Studies (CAS) is required â€“ this is issued by ÓûÂþɬ following offer acceptance, medical clearance, and appointment of a guardian. Visa applications are managed by our immigration lawyer, Holmes & Partners, who act on behalf of the school to support families throughout the visa process.

In other instances, such as if a child is accompanying their parent/s on a parental visa, evidence of this must be shared with us. To comply with UKVI regulations, specific living arrangements must be considered and adhered to.

If you have any questions regarding visas, the Admissions Team would be delighted to help – email admissions@loretto.com or call 0131 653 4455.

Guardianship

Guardians are a vital link between the school and home, acting as a representative for parents whilst their child studies abroad with us. They provide an essential service, from looking after children during holidays to acting as an emergency contact.

Whether your child is at ÓûÂþɬ for one and a half terms or to the end of their education, they are required to have a UK-based guardian throughout the course of their stay. The position can be undertaken by family or friends if they are nearby. Alternatively, you may wish to appoint a guardian from an external agency – please contact the Admissions Team at admissions@loretto.com or on 0131 653 4455 for a list of accredited agencies.

Additional Support

Additional support and opportunities are granted to international pupils, as we strive to help them thrive academically, socially, and holistically, ensuring their integration into the school community.

English as a Second Language (ESL)

This department plays an important role in supporting international pupils to enhance their English language proficiency and to access the general curriculum.

Through individual and personalised support and assistance in the completion of prep and coursework tasks, ESL lessons enhance the confidence of pupils and their familiarity with the language, so that they achieve their potential across the curriculum.

ESL is an important part of the pastoral care provided at ÓûÂþɬ, often providing a first ‘port of call’ for overseas students to air any worries or concerns.

International English Language Testing System (IELTS)

International pupils for whom English is a second language also attend International English Language Testing System (IELTS) classes, enabling them to become fluent in English as quickly as possible.

At ÓûÂþɬ, pupils prepare for the IELTS by studying intensively for one year, with three lessons per week in small classes of just three to five pupils. Elsewhere, it is common to study the course over two years. This faster and more focused approach frees pupils up to concentrate on their A Levels in their final year, in turn, ensuring most pupils achieve the results necessary for entry into top universities.
