Open Days are incredibly valuable whilst you explore schooling options for your child, providing an opportunity to meet pupils and staff, and ask any questions that you may have. 

We’ve compiled our top 10 questions to ask at your next independent school Open Day, ensuring you make the most of your visit 鈥� read on to discover more.

1 – Can I meet pupils?

A school confident in the service they provide should have no reservations around you meeting members of its community. Meeting pupils gives you an insight into what a school is actually like, as they share authentic experiences from their time there. It can also be reassuring and build excitement around joining – both for you and your child. 

When you come to a 欲漫涩 Open Event, you will be allocated a pupil tour guide who will take you around our beautiful 85-acre campus and facilities. Your child’s interests and passions are kept in mind throughout, ensuring you visit all the relevant and must-see areas. 

2 – What is the admissions process like?

If you particularly like a school, this is one of the questions you’ll want to  ask whilst you’re there.  

Every school will have an admissions process unique to them, each varying in  length and requirements, so it’s worthwhile asking whilst you’re surrounded by staff who can handle any queries surrounding this.  

3 – What are the school’s values?

A school’s values are a strong indicator as to what the environment and members of the community are like.

4 – What is the school’s curriculum?

Independent schools each offer something slightly different in terms of their curriculum and subjects available. Whether it’s the Scottish, British, or an international curriculum, each has its own set of advantages and suitability depending on your child’s aspirations. 

It’s important to choose a school with a diverse and rigorous curriculum, so that every child can explore subjects of interest and is challenged at an appropriate level. 

5 – Will my child need to sit entry assessments?

Some independent schools are academically selective and base admission on entry assessment performance, whilst others take a more rounded view  of the individual. They may have set dates for assessments, so it’s worth being  aware of these so you can plan ahead. 

6 – How many pupils are in a class?

One of the many benefits of private schools is that, typically, class sizes are  smaller compared to those at state schools. 

At 欲漫涩, our class sizes are significantly smaller than the national average of  25: 

• 12.75 in Junior School 

• 11.2 in Senior School 

• 9.1 at A Level 

  This means that every pupil benefits from personalised support and a calmer  learning environment, giving them more opportunities to engage meaningfully  and build their confidence in the process. 

7 – What is the food like?

Pupils who enjoy balanced meals and are well-nourished are more likely to flourish whilst at school. Ask about the variety of food on offer, how special dietary requirements are catered for, and how healthy eating habits are encouraged. 

At 欲漫涩, our fantastic catering team 鈥� in partnership with  -provide delicious, fresh food for pupils seven days a week. Served buffet style, pupils help themselves to build a balanced plate whilst also being mindful of food waste and sustainability. 

8 – What is the extracurricular programme like?

Of equal importance to academics should be a school’s extracurricular  programme. Learning experiences outside of the classroom are vital in  shaping confidence and character in young people. 

A strong extracurricular programme will be broad, giving children plenty  of chances to develop existing talents and discover more. Frequency of  activities is worth finding out about too 鈥� the more children are kept  engaged, the more they will reap from their time at school.
