Five Reasons to Study in Scotland

Scotland is a popular destination for international students, with one third of pupils at Scottish boarding schools coming from overseas. A rich and interesting country, there’s a whole host of reasons as to why you should study in Scotland – here’s our top five.

World-class Education

ɬ Science

The British education system is highly regarded around the world, thanks to its broad and balanced approach and preparation for later life.

At ɬ, pupils gain GCSEs, A Levels, and BTEC qualifications. With over twenty subjects to select from at A Level alone, ɬnians can explore an array of interests and attain a wide general knowledge. The success of pupils in this system is especially evident when considering exam results – our pupils consistently achieve exam results above the national average. These qualifications are globally recognised, supporting pupils on their journeys to exciting and varied destinations after leaving school.

Alongside academic success, Scottish schools seek to instil other integral qualities and skillsets, equipping them for life outside of the classroom. Since ɬ’s founding in 1827, pupils have benefitted from a holistic education, developing in mind, body, and spirit. Through a wide range of extracurricular and social activities, pupils gain confidence, whilst also becoming well-rounded young people.

Landscapes and Location

Scotland is home to some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world, with features such as beaches, lochs, and dramatic mountains dotted around the country.

ɬ Drone Campus

ɬ’s prime location on the East Lothian coast offers pupils the best of country and city living. Our 85-acre leafy, green campus, gives pupils plenty of space to roam, learn, and grow.

With such close proximity to Edinburgh – we’re a short 20-minute drive to the city centre – we are easily accessible by road, rail, and air. So, for those joining us from overseas, there’s no need to worry about any difficulty reaching us or getting back home over the holidays.

A Vibrant, Diverse Country

Scotland is a vibrant and diverse country, comprised of many nationalities.

This is reflected in our school community, which welcomes individuals from 28 different countries and makes ɬ an exciting place to learn and develop. Pupils expand their horizons, share different world views, and form global connections, standing them in good stead for life both at and beyond school.

Incredible Sporting Opportunities

Scotland has had a huge impact on sport throughout history, with Golf and Curling finding their origins here, and Scots contributing to the development of Rugby, Football, and Hockey.

Sporting opportunities in Scotland are varied, with independent school sports programmes reflecting this. At ɬ, pupils participate in a range of Major and Minor team sports, such as Cricket, Hockey, Netball, and Rugby.

Impressive facilities are located across our campus, from the full-size AstroTurf – perfect for Tennis or Hockey – to the unrivalled ɬ Golf Academy, which is home to state-of-the-art equipment and technology to enhance our players’ performance.

Pupils also benefit from the expertise of our coaching team – many of whom have played and coached at national and international level, including Jason White, former British and Irish Lions player, and Duncan Riddell, former Scotland Hockey player.

The success of our sports programme is reflected in the number of pupils who have secured scholarships to US colleges to pursue their sporting ambitions, and those who have been selected for national and international teams in their respective sports.

A Rich Culture

Scottish culture is incredibly rich, with history and traditions spanning thousands of years. A proud country, Scots are always up for celebrating these – and making them as large as possible.

There are plenty of chances for pupils to get involved in some of the country’s finest traditions whilst studying at ɬ. Ceilidhs, Burns Night celebrations, and sampling culinary delights all add to the excitement of studying in Scotland.

Being just a short journey from Edinburgh means pupils have frequent opportunities to explore the thriving capital. From academic trips to social excursions on the weekend, pupils have access to some of the finest galleries, museums, vibrant festivals, restaurants, and shopping experiences.
